Videogame systems used to be more of an add-on item in rental, but thanks to the latest second-generation console systems they are taking their place as the focal point of a complete home entertainment system.
“It’s like Home Entertainment married Consumer Electronics and second-generation systems like Xbox 360 and the upcoming Playstation 3 and Nintento Wii were born,” said Denis Rosen, National Sales Manager of Florida State Games.
“Our company provides custom bundles for the rental channel that include items like a carrying case, an extra controller and one or two games. We incorporate everything into the hardware box so what rental stores have to offer is different than, say, Best Buy. We add controllers because we know a typical household has more than one gamer. And we add games so the purchase can be more of an impulse at rental because the customer can go right home and play.”
Customers can do more than just play games when they get their system home. The latest consoles offer HD DVD functionality as well as providing use as an audio player, an MP3 player, a photo player and more.
“These second-generation systems will just blow you away with the quality of the game play and graphics plus all the other functionality built right in. For instance, the PS3 that’s coming out in November will include a controller that moves the scene within the game to correspond to your moves. If you tilt right, the game tilts right. And Nintendo’s Wii has a totally different type of wand controller that helps to fully immerse the user in gameplay.”
Because Florida State Games keeps between $20 and $25 million in inventory on-hand at any time (ballooning to as much as $35 million during fourth quarter), rental dealers don’t have to buy deep to keep a selection of game bundles on hand.
“We ship direct-to-store via UPS, FedEx, whatever a dealer needs. We like to say we can get any store in the game business within 24-48 hours. We believe in training store employees so we always provide 4-6 ‘bells and whistles’ to entice the customer to rent. We also recommend merchandising these systems on a large high-definition set in your rental store. The effect blows customers away every time.”
