With the
growth of wide displays in the consumer market, many leading PC
brands are considering putting a halt on further development of
standard aspect notebook PCs.

Shipments of wide-aspect ratio
notebook PCs in Q2'06 exceeded 60% share of the worldwide
notebook PC market according to research group NPD. NPD's POS
sell-though data from major US retailers selling to consumers
clearly shows the consumer market for notebook PCs is
increasingly dominated by widescreen models with penetration
rates now as high as 98%.
A milestone was achieved in Q1'06 when worldwide penetration of
widescreen notebook PCs surpassed 50%, a stark contrast to just
one year ago when widescreen notebook PC shipments were less
than 35% of the total worldwide notebook PC market. The growth
in widescreen notebook PCs can be attributed to the growth of
multimedia applications, portable form factors that allow for
the inclusion of a full-sized QWERTY keyboard by "widening" the
overall design of notebook without making it significantly
larger, and the most important trend: reduced prices.
While wide LCD notebook PC panels once commanded a substantial
premium over standard aspect (4:3) ratio notebook panels, prices
for wide panels are now on par with standard panels, thanks to
improved manufacturing efficiencies. "The trend towards
widescreen displays on notebook PCs is a benefit for producers
and end-users alike," said John Jacobs, Director of Notebook
Market Research at DisplaySearch. "Whether these widescreen
notebooks are being used for business applications or for
general at-home consumer use, all types of users can benefit
from the productivity gains associated with having more
information on the screen at the same time, all get to enjoy a
full size keyboard, and none have to be burdened with
significantly larger or heavier PCs. Panel producers for these
wide panels also benefit from a more favorable cost structure
when producing wide displays as well, making this trend truly a
win-win scenario."
A more detailed analysis of the factors influencing the growing
popularity of wide notebook PCs reveals that the most popular
wide sizes are in the 14.x" and 15.x" size segments with
15.4"Wide accounting for a market leading 39% share of Q2'06 WW
shipments. The table below shows that when wide aspect ratio
panels were introduced into the 15.x" size segment in Q1'02, it
was four years before these panels accounted for more than 50%
of this size category. By contrast, in the 14.x" group, wide was
introduced in Q3'04 and will overtake standard aspect ratio
displays this year, signaling increased acceptance of wide
products by both the consumer and commercial markets.

As shown in the following table, 15.4"Wide 1280 × 800 is
currently the most popular wide aspect ratio product by size. It
surpassed 15.0" 1024 × 768 in the past year and now out-ships
the standard aspect product by more than 2:1. 14.1" Wide 1280 ×
800 made its appearance less than one year ago, but it has
quickly grown to become the third-most popular size and
resolution, and is forecast to be #2 by the end of 2006.

Although wide products have been much slower to penetrate the
corporate market, this barrier will be broken in the near
future. New operating systems entering the market will help with
legacy concerns in the corporate workplace. With growing
recognition of the benefits of wide displays for business
applications and the growth of wide displays in the consumer
market, many leading PC brands are considering putting a halt on
further development of standard aspect notebook PCs.
After the typical seasonal slowdown in Q1'06 and Q2'06,
DisplaySearch expects the worldwide notebook PC market to grow
significantly in 2H'06, exceeding 19.4 million units in Q3'06
and 215 million units in Q4'06 for a total 40.9M units, compared
to just 34.7 million units in 1H'06. The increase in volume in
2H'06 will be driven by the combined forces of back to school
and holiday seasonality and greater availability of dual core
CPUs. Beyond 2006, DisplaySearch expects notebook PC shipments
to reach 91.7M units in 2007, growing to almost 137M units by
2010.
