In the past 12 months, RTO
Online has been the victim of 3 so called 'Denial of service'
attacks. The most recent occurred on December 17th.
A denial of service attack is accomplished by programming a
computer to 'hit' (request a page, series of pages, or an image)
from a website many times per second, until the server is
overloaded, slows down, and regular visitors are unable to view
pages. Thus the term 'Denial of Service'. In the most severe
cases, a server may eventually crash (lock up).
During the December 17th attack, the offending computer hit
our servers more than 72,000 times in less than 2 hours. While
RTO Online was not shut down and security was never compromised,
some visitors experienced slow page loading.
The good news...The 3 attacks that have occurred so far have
been rather unsophisticated and easily identifiable. In all 3
cases, the system administrators and the company owners of the
offending systems were notified in real time and the attacks
ceased immediately. We have been assured by the companies that
the attacks were "not malicious". To learn more about Cybercrime,
