The Inmate
Advantage Calling Plan was developed to facilitate positive and
affordable communications services for Inmates and their Friends
and Families.
dPi Teleconnect, LLC, a leading
provider of prepaid services credit and cash constrained
consumers, today announced it has developed a new prepaid
calling product that will be marketed and sold through its Agent
Sales Network. The Inmate Advantage Calling Plan will be tested
through an initial distribution to 150 selected Agents on
February 1, 2008 with a full rollout to its entire Agent Network
during the summer months.
The United States has the largest percentage of prison
population in the Western World with over 1,600,000 US citizens
behind bars and another 3,500,000 on house arrest. The Inmate
Advantage Calling Plan was developed to facilitate positive and
affordable communications services for Inmates and their Friends
and Families.
According to Dave Dorwart, President and CEO of dPi, "There is
no worse feeling than that of being alone and helpless. This
especially applies to the families of those who are incarcerated
just as much as it does to those behind the walls. dPi's goal in
developing this product is to bridge the currently unaffordable
communication barriers that exist in the use of the "collect
calling only" methods in use in the prison systems today."
Dorwart goes on to quote an article recently published in the NY
Times that states, "Studies of prison inmates clearly show that
keeping them in contact with friends and family is vital to
giving them a chance to create an honest life after
incarceration, yet the simple act of picking up the phone to
call home can be bankrupting for inmates and their families. The
counterproductive system now in place around the country charges
them as much as six times the going rate for collect calls
placed from inside local, state, and federal facilities. The
collect-call service providers keep a stranglehold on the
business by paying the state prisons a legalized kickback or a
commission."
"These costs are borne by spouses, parents and other
collect-call recipients who typically come from the country's
poorest families. Worse still, these families can be barred from
receiving a prisoner's collect call at all until they open
costly accounts with the same companies that provide the prison
phone service. With bills that sometimes reach into the hundreds
of dollars a month, families must often choose between talking
to an incarcerated loved one and paying the rent. The lost
contact is especially crushing for imprisoned parents, who make
up more than half the national prison population and are often
held in prisons hundreds of miles away from their children" the
article goes on to state.
dPi is the first and only prepaid focused service provider to
offer these inmate calling services to its customer base. As dPi
continues to grow through acquisition and other methods, "We
will continue to develop our product mix to address every
communication gap in our effort to provide affordable fixed rate
communications services to both our Agent and Customer base"
said Dorwart.
