You won't find any clever names or contrived programs from Rental Information Systems. Their philosophy of in-store POS system development is as direct as their name itself – make it user-friendly and easy to understand.

"Our in-store software program is designed for a 32-bit point and click Windows-based environment," said Doug Ruby, Director of Marketing for Rental Information Systems. "In other words, it is the same PC environment that most people are familiar with. Given the high turnover rate at the store level, this makes getting up to speed on our system quick and easy."

Not only does the Windows environment make understanding the functionality simple, it also makes it easy to integrate store level and back office data into other Microsoft applications.

"As a Microsoft-certified partner, we have developed this entire system on a SQL server, or a Microsoft database engine. This open database environment allows stores and home office personnel to easily pull reports into Word, Excel, Outlook, and more."

The company currently supports about 400 locations on its software program, and has historically appealed to a small, independent customer base. However, Ruby says the system has the ability to support larger companies, and they plan to pursue larger sales opportunities down the road.

"We track more information at the store level than any other system out there. This system has essentially been in development since 1985, and we have constantly tweaked and upgraded as customers need it. With the SQL server, we can replicate real-time data for instant reporting, or provide end-of-day reports, as requested. It's a really flexible system."

Ruby says Rental Information Systems license structure is probably "middle of the road", but points to the fact that there is no large up front investment as a crucial point of difference. "Because this system operates on a Windows/PC environment, any off-the-shelf PC can run this software. There are no special machines or operating systems to invest in."

This will be Rental Information Systems' second RentDirect show, and in typical direct style, Ruby explains the show's appeal. "We tend to see the same customers all the time at other shows. But with RentDirect we got to see some folks we weren't even aware were out there."
