Handle cash
only when the store is closed and the doors are locked, or at
least behind closed doors where the cash is not visible to
outsiders. Never count cash in a location visible from the
street.
Both
rent-to-own and retail stores are more susceptible to robbery
attempts during opening and closing procedures. Fewer employees
and customers to contend with coupled with end-of-day cash
handling mean employees must be extra vigilant during these
critical few hours.
Following are tips to reduce your risk of robbery:
- Be Alert. Greet everyone that comes in the door. This relates
the message to them that they have been identified, and lets
potential robbers know you are paying attention.
- Watch for suspicious shoppers. Robbers often “browse” for long
periods of time, waiting for the opportunity to steal when all
other customers are gone.
Open & Close Procedures:
- Handle cash only when the store is closed and the doors
are locked, or at least behind closed doors where the cash is
not visible to outsiders. Never count cash in a location visible
from the street.
- Maintain as little cash on site as possible. Make bank
deposits often, and vary your deposit schedule and route to the
bank.
- Hang signs saying stating “little cash in register” and
advertise your video surveillance to your clients. Have
deterrent monitors placed in obvious spots so that shoppers can
see themselves on the monitor.
- Use a drop safe to deposit large bills.
- Try to limit access to the cash register. Install a
lockable door or gate to get behind the counter.
- Lock all side and back entrances, storage rooms, and
offices.
- High risk locations, such as payday loans, check cashing
stores or any other location handling very large amounts of
cash, should consider using bullet-proof glass on doors and
windows.
Crime Prevention by Environmental Design:
- Install Surveillance. Surveillance puts the offender
under threat of being observed, identified, and apprehended.
- Define Store Territory - The use of signage, fencing or
maintained landscaping will help to define the store property.
- Access Control - Limit the number of ways to get into
the business. Prevention such as security systems, locks,
windows, doors, fences, walls, and landscaping will prevent and
discourage public access from unmonitored areas.
- Maintenance - A well-maintained space conveys that you
care about the business. A positive image is a significant
deterrent to criminal behavior. All graffiti, and trash or
debris should be removed.
