Sandberg Furniture is an 88-year old company that has spent only a fraction of its time – just over four years – serving the rental channel. But what a four years it has been. Since introducing Sandberg to the rental industry in 2002, Wayne Harris, National Account Manager for Sandberg, has helped his company grow in leaps and bounds earning it APRO’s coveted Vendor of the Year award in 2005. What made such dramatic growth possible in such a short time?

“I believe it’s the quality of our product coupled with the fact that it is all made right here in the states at our Los Angeles-based facility. That means rental stores have near-immediate access to product when they need it. Sandberg maintains in excess of 7,000 complete bedroom sets in our warehouse at all times. We build our product to inventory, not to order. That way we’re always ready to ship.”

It also helps that Sandberg is focused on manufacturing just three furniture categories: master bedroom suites, youth bedroom sets and entertainment walls. That narrow but deep focus allows Sandberg to focus on maintaining full inventory levels without sacrificing high standards of quality.

“Quality of product is the single most important issue when a consumer purchases a piece of furniture, so product quality should be just as important to the dealer who is renting that furniture. Our bedroom sets include side metal roller guides, automatic stops and fully-finished drawer interiors. These details not only increase the value of our product to your customer, it makes increased turns on Sandberg merchandise all the more likely.”

Youth bedrooms are a huge growth category for RTO, which typically lags behind retail trends just a bit. Currently, youth bedroom sets make up 18% purchases in the retail sector, but remain a miniscule fraction of that amount in rental.

“Again, it’s a high-growth potential category and one that has not been widely offered by rental dealers in the past. Youth bedrooms have grown way beyond the old pine bunk bed and desk set that used to be an RTO staple.”

Another area set to explode is entertainment walls. As television sets continue to change at an almost dizzying pace, the furniture it’s displayed on will need to keep pace with the times, as well. And Sandberg Furniture is just the company to help.
