The Full Committee Markup of HR1701 began today
after some delaying tactics by the democratic opposition. Once the
session began, most of the discussion centered around the same
tired amendment that Maxine Waters has been trying to tag on to
the bill for some time. The amendment would require APR disclosure
for all Rent to Own transactions. Ms Waters was supported by
Vermont Representative Bernie Sanders, and Ohio Representative
Stephanie Tubbs Jones.
Waters, Sanders, and Tubbs-Jones demonstrated
three things...their ignorance of the facts, a belief in their own
constituents stupidity, and their desire to make "news by
sound-bite".
After much consideration, we present our
"Sound-Bite of the Day" award to the honorable Stephanie
Tubbs Jones for this unforgettable phrase...
"I feel the need to speak for consumers
who don't even know they are being consumed"
Stephanie Tubbs Jones D (OH)
After much discussion, the amendment was defeated
and the committee is in recess until 10:00 am Thursday morning.
