The most
blatant flip-flop comes from Wisconsin Attorney General Peg Lautenschlager
(D)
Liberal special interest groups of all stripes are ratcheting up
the pressure on Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle to veto rental
purchase legislation recently passed by both houses of the
Wisconsin legislature (see
story).
The most blatant flip-flop comes from Wisconsin Attorney General
Peg Lautenschlager (D).
After announcing her support for the legislation over two years
ago (See Wisconsin Attorney General Supports Rent
to Own Bill As Amended), Lautenschlager
flip-flopped and sent a letter to Governor Doyle recommending a
veto. Her radical change of heart likely has it's roots in her ambition for his
office, say insiders.
The Wisconsin law, SB 268, not only brings the state into the
mainstream of 47 other states operating under similar
regulations, it goes above and beyond all other state laws in
terms of consumer protections.
The law recognizes rental purchase agreements as a lease, rather
than a credit sale, and protects consumers by strictly defining
disclosure requirements.
Republican Representative (82nd)
Jeff Stone expertly argued for passage of the new law during
debate earlier this month.
RTO Online put together an
audio presentation
containing Mr. Stone's 3 brief arguments totaling 6
minutes including audio of
the final vote. You will find no better argument in favor of SB
268 than his words.
