Wisconsin
Senator Ron Brown (R 31st) said Thursday, “SB 268, Consumer
Rental Purchase Reform, would have created the strongest
consumer protections in the country for rental-purchase
agreements. Given his staff’s involvement in crafting the bill,
I am very, very disappointed that Governor Doyle chose to veto
it at the eleventh hour.
Brown added, "This action had nothing to do with policy, but is
pure politics. In his veto message, Doyle cites the objections
of two state agencies, the Departments of Financial Institutions
(DFI) and Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection. DFI helped
draft the legislation and if that department or any other agency
had serious concerns about the bill they had ample opportunity
to make those concerns clear before today. They did not.”
