14 Representatives signed on as
co-sponsors of HR996, the Consumer Rental Purchase Agreement
Act, bringing the grand total to 50; 35 Republican and 15
Democrat including main sponsor
Rep. Walter
Jones (R -NC). The avalanche of support follows the APRO
sponsored 'Dave Egan Legislative Conference' being held in
Washington this week.
The 14 latest co-sponsors are...
Four of these names are new; 2 Representatives among this
latest group of co-sponsors voted in favor of HR1701 (107th
Congress), but did not cosponsor the bill. They are
Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart
(R-FL), and
Rep. Jim Leach (R-IA). Two
are freshman;
Rep. Michael Burgess
(R-TX), and
Rep. Jim Cooper (D-TN).
Rep. Jim Leach (R-IA) is
the biggest catch among these latest co-sponsors. Rep. Leach was
first elected in 1976 and is serving his 14th term. He is the
highest ranking Republican (behind Chairman Oxley) on the House
Financial Services Committee; the committee through which RTO
legislation must pass.
Trivia: Jim Leach began
his political career in 1965 as a staff member to then
congressman Donald Rumsfeld.
