Mississippi Senator Trent Lott (R), perennial rent to own industry supporter and cosponsor the Consumer Rental Purchase Agreement Act of 2007 (S 1012), will resign from the Senate before the end of 2007.

Lott is the sixth incumbent Republican that will retire before the November 2008 election. The surprise retirement means both of Mississippi's Senate seats will be on the ballot in 2008.

At a press conference today, Lott said, "For a boy from Pascagoula, Mississippi, it's been quite a wild ride, but a very enjoyable one, and one that I'm proud of. I just want to say thank you to the people of Mississippi for the great honor and opportunity of serving this state. I've loved it, and I hope that I've helped make a positive difference."

Lott is in his 34th year of service in the United States Congress and is the current Senate Republican Whip, his party’s number two leadership position. Senator Lott is the only Senator to have served as Whip in both the House of Representatives and the Senate. He has served under seven Presidents.

In 1981, Lott created the House of Representative's first modern whip organization, focusing on regular member-to-member contacts and extensive outreach to sympathetic Democrats.

Lott reportedly considered retirement in 2005, however, after Hurricane Katrina, he announced on January 17, 2006 that he would run for a fourth term.

In addition to his leadership role, Senator Lott serves as the ranking member on the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee’s Aviations Operations, Safety and Security Subcommittee. He also serves on the Rules and Administration Committee and is a senior member of the Finance Committee, overseeing social security, tax and health care policy.
