Ron Waters, APRO Government Affairs Director, and
15 year employee of the Association, was fired on Friday. This was the first in
what may be a series of cutbacks set in motion by the board of directors to
cover an $800,000 budget shortfall.
The cuts became necessary when APRO recently lost it's two biggest members, Rent
Way and Rent a Center. The two companies resigned from the Association within
days of each other (see story). The
resignations were reportedly due in part to disputes about management practices
within APRO. Rent a Center and Rent Way accounted for nearly half the
association's budget.
Sources tell RTO Online that the $400,000 legislative budget was completely
eliminated for next year. The PR budget will also be affected, sources say.
Waters coordinated APRO’s federal and state legislative program and served as
national liaison to state rental associations. He was also treasurer of the
national Political Action Committee.
