You've done TV, radio, newsprint,
inserts, flyers and in-store promotions. But few things beat a
door-hanger for effective marketing. (See
door hanger and other marketing material examples here.)
A door hanger is an economical way to deliver your message and
can be as simple as black print on colored stock or as complex
as a four color printing process.
Door hangers are an effective way for you to inform, educate and
sell your prospect. But just like any other “first impression”
your door hanger has just a few seconds to get the information
to your prospect in a logical, “call to action” manner, and to
get them to act on the opportunity presented.
The door hanger should be designed the same as any other
effective presentation; The opening, the presentation and the
call to action.
The Opening
The opening is in the form of a headline that calls out to the
prospect when they first see your door hanger.
The Presentation
The body of the door hanger details the benefits of your product
or service with great emphasis on those items that the prospect
can relate to.
Call to Action
Just like any good face-to-face close, ask the prospect to visit
the store or respond in some way.
Every effective door hanger has the following characteristics:
1. It visually telegraphs the message to your prospect without
him having to read the first word. Recognizable illustrations
are the best way to grab attention quickly and say volumes about
your company.
2. Be brief. You have only a few short seconds to get the
message across before you lose the prospects attention.
Requiring a prospect to read paragraph after paragraph will only
turn him off. Be benefit oriented. That’s what’s important to
the prospect. How will your product benefit him or her.
3. Don’t just present the product, ask for action and tell the
prospect what to do next. Call You, Email You, Stop By Our
Store, Refer A Friend, etc. Provide her with the information she
needs to proceed.
4. Include a Reminder for your prospect. Clip an inexpensive,
company-imprinted pen or other promotional item onto the
hole of the door hanger as a tangible reminder of your message.
Make sure it includes your name, address and phone (his call to
action) and perhaps a discount if he brings the pen into the
store and signs a new contract.
5. Don’t forgot Door Hanger Etiquette. Check local ordinances
about door hangers and their distribution. There is always the
possibility that someone will see your marketing efforts as an
intrusion. Ask for permission to distribute materials on private
property. Don’t be defensive if someone expresses displeasure
about your activities. And be sure that you are not putting out
door hangers in a wind storm - litter is very bad for public
relations, particularly when it has your name printed all over
it.
