Southern Representatives
Gene
Taylor (D-MS 4th) and
Robert
"Bud" Cramer (D-AL 5th) have
signed on as co-sponsors of HR996, The House version of
'The Consumer Rental Purchase Agreement Act', bringing the
co-sponsor count to 84.
Neither Taylor nor Cramer have cosponsored Rent to Own
legislation in the past. Both Representatives voted in
favor of HR1701, the 107th Congress' version of the Act, which
passed the House in 2002 and later failed in the Senate. In 2002, HR1701 came to a vote shortly after
reaching 83 co-sponsors. There have been
7 attempts at passage in
the house since 1985.

Rep. Cramer is in his seventh term and serves on the
Appropriations Committee and
Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence . Prior to being elected to the US House
of Representatives in 1990, Rep. Cramer was Madison Co. District
Attorney from 1980-90.

Rep. Taylor is in his eighth term and serves on the
Armed
Services and
Transportation and Infrastructure committees. Prior to being elected to the US House
of Representatives in 1989, Rep. Taylor served on the Bay St.
Louis City Council, 1981-83 and the Mississippi State Senate
from 1983-89 .

Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit on 3/14/2003. A
hearing has not yet been scheduled.
