Scott Hogan never dreamed his job making deliveries for a rent-to-own (RTO) store would lead him to entrepreneurship. Now, 20 years later, he and his wife Cindy have opened their first ColorTyme store in Gallatin, Tennessee, just outside of Nashville, with plans for more.

Scott’s beginning in RTO was admittedly humble, but he worked his way up from deliveries to store manager and then became regional manager for Aaron’s. “Even though making deliveries was my first ‘real’ job, I was able to perform well in the position and build a career for myself, and eventually a business for my family,” said Hogan.

Hogan and his family live in Hendersonville and chose Gallatin for their store because of his wife’s roots in the area and her history of RTO success there. Cindy serves as managing partner for the new ColorTyme venture and has been in RTO for almost 14 years—serving as a store manager before joining the franchise.

The Hogans plan to open three to four additional ColorTyme stores in the Nashville area with the help of their family. Son Michael and son-in-law Johnny Ramirez work in the Gallatin store now and are in training to lead the Hogans’ ColorTyme franchise in the future.

“Working with my family is amazing, because instead of giving all of my time and myself to work, I have the opportunity to give myself to my family,” said Hogan. “Down the road, this will be my legacy – a chance to share my future with them.”

Equally important, the Hogans want their customers to know the Gallatin ColorTyme is locally owned and operated, and because of that, their team is able to do things for customers that big corporations cannot.

“We can get almost anything our customers want. For example, one of my customers needed a lawnmower and because ColorTyme doesn’t limit the merchandise we provide, I bought the lawnmower and arranged a rent-to-own plan that worked for my customer’s budget,” said Hogan. “This business is about being there to help our customers, not just getting payments on time. That’s a value I think we are passing on to our family through our work.”

ColorTyme, Inc. is the oldest franchised rent-to-own or rental purchase company in the United States with nearly 300 stores.
