Jack Rowland began his Rent to Own
career in 1981 as a
delivery driver for REMCO. By age 20, he was
managing one of the largest stores in the country with monthly
revenues exceeding $110,000. He has worked for many rental
companies since then, mostly as a troubleshooter. "I was the
'fixer', the one they sent in to find out why a store wasn’t
working" Jack says. "I was often called on to to figure out if a
store needed to be moved, closed or merged."
Jack found that, with few exceptions, the problem was the staff.
"I have worked from up state NY to California and all points
in-between. In all, I haven't found a store, a market, or a town
that I couldn't grow in."

In July, 2001 Jack decided to leave the pack and open his
own store in his hometown of Sacramento California. He
contacted ColorTyme, Rent America and Premier Rental-Purchase.
After reviewing all the options available, he chose
Premier Rental-Purchase. Jack told RTO Online "Premier’s
licensing philosophy worked best for me. Premier provides
excellent support and unlike some of the bigger chains, they
help me run the business the way I want to run it."
With Premier’s help in putting together a loan package, Jack's
SBA guaranteed loan was approved by a local bank within 6 weeks.
"Once approved for the loan, Premier’s 'store-in-the-box'
program allowed me to open my doors in less than 8 weeks" said
Jack, "including a total build out of my location." On September
23rd 2001, he opened for business.
Realizing he needed to grow fast and hard to get to positive
cash flow quickly, Jack followed the plan.

"So, I did what I know how to do best… grow customers, grow BOR,
and grow revenues. In less than 5 months I hit 700 agreements
with revenue exceeding $68,000 in the short month of February.
Although the growth was incredibly fast, I had only 3 charge
offs and my weekly credit averaged less than 4%.
| Today, Jack Rowland's Sacramento Premier
Rental-Purchase has 1015 agreements (1480 Core BOR: not
counting accessories). While current monthly revenue numbers
are confidential, Jack hints they are in the neighborhood of
100K. He estimates his revenue ranking as 3rd, and his
margin as #1 in the entire Sacramento market. 7% of his customers
use automatic withdrawal for weekly or monthly payments.

Jack learned many tough lessons about P&L’s vs. Cash flow and
can appreciate how rapid grow almost broke some of the small
dealers he worked for in the past.

"Over the years I have seen small and large players open their
doors understaffed, under trained and under inventoried. I
believe my success has always come from believing in my
customers and always treating them as such. I do business the
way business use to be done…one customer at a time… and always
treat them with respect the way RentWay taught me, “make them
feel welcome, wanted, and important”.
Jack looks back with delight on the day he decided to strike out
on his own.
Jack Rowland
"It was the biggest and best decision I have ever made in my
life. My family’s life has changed forever. I just want to say
Thank You to Premier and the many others who believed and helped
me make this happen. The Rent-to-Own industry is still just as
good as it always has been as long as you make sure your
customers come first! "
Plans are in place to open a second Sacramento location in
September. Jack hopes to expand to 5 total locations within the
city.
