We all know rental customers can be hard on merchandise, leaving many RTO companies wary of offering costly and delicate notebook computers. After all, it’s easier to equate the terms “rent” and “hard drive” to rental cars, not laptops. But Twinhead Corporation, a true primary manufacturer of laptop computers, has created the DURABOOK – the first Ruggedized Laptop that wholesales for under $1,000.

“DURABOOK comes from years of research and development by Twinhead. Our company has been a pioneer in the notebook industry. Along with Mitsubishi, we were the first company to create a laptop for consumer use back in the mid-1980’s,” said Ray Oribello, Director of Sales and Marketing for Twinhead. “Now, we are at the forefront of the industry again by developing the first ruggedized laptop that can be purchased for under $1,000.”

So how, exactly, does Twinhead ‘ruggedize’ a notebook? First, they use a magnesium alloy case 20 times stronger than a standard laptop case to protect the screen and hard drive from drops and shock. The hard drive itself is also anti-shock mounted to protect it from crashing. There is a spill-resistant tray underneath the keyboard to protect internal components from accidental spills. In fact, the DURABOOK is so strong that it conforms to US Military standard “810F”.

“Our objective was to create a durable laptop that could be affordable to the average consumer yet still offer features similar to mainstream laptops. We have succeeded in our task, as comparable laptops start at more than $2,000.”

The DURABOOK has been successful in the retail and e-commerce channels and is sold through BestBuy.com, Circuit City.com, Shop NBC, Sam’s Club, Comp USA, Micro Center and more. But Oribello believes some of the best potential for DURABOOK lies in a rental environment.

“At the last RentDirect show we had phenomenal response. In fact, we sold through our entire inventory. Dealers were taking it back to their stores right off the floor. I’ve never had that happen before. They definitely saw the potential with DURABOOK to get longer life out of their notebook inventory at a greatly reduced cost.”

Thanks to their heritage in the notebook industry, insiders have often referred to Twinhead as the ‘grandfather of the notebook’ – but one thing’s for sure. DURABOOK ain’t your grandpa’s laptop.
