  Real Life account:

While I was working in XYZ Company as an IT manager, I made my self available to all of our store personnel at anytime of the day or night. So if there was a problem that hinders them from doing their daily operation, I would quickly respond to it, in order to keep them up and running and continue with the smooth operation of our computer systems.

One beautiful and sunny Sunday, I woke up early in the morning, and what a fine day it was. A beautiful and warm summer day, clear sky, sun shine, and the birds were flocking to the bird feeder in my front yard. I quickly grabbed my cup of coffee and ran to refill the bird feeder.

I sat on my screened- in porch sipping my coffee and admiring the wonderful day and decided to get my lawnmower and do my chore for the day.

Suddenly I hear my son calling my name so loud that he could be heard over the noise of my lawnmower. I stopped to inquire what could be so important that it required screaming. He handed me the phone and told me it was someone from your work that said it was an emergency!

Here is an account of that conversation:

The Caller: Sir My Name is ------ I am from Store ------ sorry to bother you at home but my computer was making a very load beeping sound and now everything is black and I can not do anything!

Me: “It’s ok, just calm down and we will work our way through this.”

Me: “When did it start beeping?”

The Caller: “About half an hour ago.”

Me: “Ok, what were you doing then?”

The caller: “I was taking a payment.”

Me: “Ok, did you finish that payment?”

The caller: “No it just went off”.

Me: “Ok, try this and that …….plug the computer in another electric outlet …. Do you see light ….. and so forth ….half an hour latter” well it seems to me that you have a power problem.”

The caller: “Of course we lost power about an hour or so ago, their was an accident where a car ran into one of the poles that has the power transformer.”
Me: “Ah Ha, so you do not have power in your store, and since there is no power there is no computer.”

The Caller: “But it was working even after this happened!”

Me: “ Yes, but it was working out of your power backup which is good for about 20 minutes to allow you to shutdown gracefully without damage to the system. That is why it was beeping.”

The Caller: “Hmm, so when will my computer be working again?”

Me: “Well, when you get the power back”

The caller: “Can’t you just dial up and fix it?”

Me: “I just explained to you where the problem is, and there is nothing that I can do until you get the power back.”

The caller: “Yes, but how about the modem? Just dial in and help me out here!”

Me: “!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CLICK” end of conversation

I took a nap and woke up to finish mowing my yard.
